Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a really well-made gateway horror movie, just as the books were horror gateways for many kids. It features strong performances, crazy cool creature design, and an engaging enough plot. I could see this becoming something that people put on every Halloween. 8/10

The Peanut Butter Falcon – Quick Thoughts
I had the amazing opportunity to see an advance screening of The Peanut Butter Falcon with a Q&A with the directors (Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz) after the movie. To prepare for the Q&A, I went through their IMDB and watched everything I could find. This is their first feature-length movie, but they have made … Continue reading The Peanut Butter Falcon – Quick Thoughts
The Kitchen – Quick Thoughts
This one was a bummer. The trailers looked cool, I was excited to see what the comics were all about, I was excited to see Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish in serious rolls, and I was invited to an advance screening of the movie, so I was really looking forward to this. So imagine my … Continue reading The Kitchen – Quick Thoughts
Dora and the Lost City of Gold – Quick Thoughts
I liked this movie. I liked the live-action Dora movie. I thought the live-action Dora movie was clever. I thought the live-action Teen-Dora movie was fun and well-done. Wow. 8/10
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw – Quick Thoughts
Hobbes and Shaw is pretty much Mission Impossible II starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. They are both spy thrillers that focus on trying to stop the bad boys from getting a virus that is contained inside the female lead. They both have an extra third act that feels tacked on and takes place on … Continue reading Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw – Quick Thoughts
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Quick Thoughts
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I’ve just barely started ingesting Tarantino flicks, and I’m loving it. I’ve seen Kill Bill 1, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Bastards, and Django Unchained so far. (Django’s my favorite.) All of those movies are amazing, so I had pretty high expectations for his newest picture: Once Upon a Time in … Continue reading Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Quick Thoughts
Crawl – Quick Thoughts
Crawl is a perfect example of how to balance the creative and business aspects of film-making. On the creative side, Crawl is a really tense and satisfying ride that gives you a pair of instantly relateable heroes to root for and lots of gators to root against. The well-crafted screenplay and impressive cinematography makes this … Continue reading Crawl – Quick Thoughts
Spider-Man: Far From Home – Quick Thoughts
I don't like writing stuff about Marvel movies. What is there to say? Far From Home was great! It's a well crafted and fun movie that treats the source material with care. The Mysterio mindfreak scene is perfection. When that sequence was over, my friend and I let out an audible "Awww." I wanted more, … Continue reading Spider-Man: Far From Home – Quick Thoughts
Annabelle Comes Home – Quick Thoughts
Annabelle Comes Home has some excellent spooks, but it lacks a purpose. At the end of the second act, I was having a good time with the movie. Then the movie ended. This movie's least scary and least inventive sequence is the climax. It feels super anti-climactic and jarring. Before this movie, there was an … Continue reading Annabelle Comes Home – Quick Thoughts
Child’s Play (2019) – Quick Thoughts
Child's Play (2019) is a completely different movie than the 1988 original. When I was a kid, my friend had watched all of the Chucky films and told me all about them. I was terrified. So when I finally watched Child's Play (1988) nearly a decade later, imagine my surprise when it was pretty much … Continue reading Child’s Play (2019) – Quick Thoughts
