Child’s Play (2019) is a completely different movie than the 1988 original. When I was a kid, my friend had watched all of the Chucky films and told me all about them. I was terrified. So when I finally watched Child’s Play (1988) nearly a decade later, imagine my surprise when it was pretty much worse Gremlins with more fuck words. I actually think Gremlins is scarier! Chucky is one of the least intimidating horror villains ever. He’s just a really small dumb boi with a knife. Just give him a kick!
The reboot brings Chucky into the modern era. He is now a Siri-Furby mashup that’s connected to everyone’s smarthome devices. And instead of being possessed by a criminal like in the original, Chucky is just a defect model made spooky by a suicidal factory worker. Also he’s Mark Hamill now. This new Chucky has a lot more potential for spooks than the original, and they definitely deliver with some really gnarly kills. All of the actors do a fine job, but Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry especially shine.
Child’s Play (2019) isn’t groundbreaking, but it is a fun horror flick that does what a reboot should. I like it better than the original.
