At first I was sad that I didn’t get the chance to see Midsommar in theaters. I didn’t see Hereditary in theaters, but I really liked it and I was excited to see what director Ari Aster would do next. Then I saw the movie. In the end, I am really happy that I got to watch Midsommar in the comfort of my own home. This way I could loudly yell obscenities at Ari Aster whenever he showed me nasty stuff or made his characters do stupid shit. But unlike Hereditary, Midsommar’s stupid shit and nasty stuff feels without purpose or meaning. It is boring until it’s explicit. It is realistic until it’s not. It is engaging until it’s not. And the boyfriend character is such a shitty person that it becomes laughable over time. Midsommar was very disappointing.
