Booksmart might not reinvent the wheel when it comes to this kind of teen comedy, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t refine that wheel until it’s as smooth as a baby’s bottom. That was a bad sentence I just typed. Sorry.
This movie is so smarty written and so visually interesting, that it’s almost a shame that it’s confined by the drunk teen formula. Almost. There are so many moving parts in this movie that come together in such tasty ways without seeming forced. Booksmart is endlessly re-watchable and endlessly impressive as a directorial debut. This is a movie that would be so much fun to watch with friends. The soundtrack is a bit distracting though.
