Whoopsies! Bad opinion alert! Avert your eyes! Shazam! is my favorite superhero movie of the year so far. Even though it is first and foremost a comedy, (and it sure delivers on that front) Shazam! has a really effective emotional center to it. The depiction of the foster family feels genuine and it grounds the movie even at it’s silliest. It also gives you delicious morsels of brutal villain scenes that returns director David Sandberg to his horror roots. This movie takes us back to a simpler time, where family movies didn’t treat their audience like idiots and weren’t afraid to get a little spoopy. Gremlins comes to mind. All these elements add up to a hell of a time that I highly recommend.
